20th Century Gran Canaria Education

The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) was established in 1989, marking a significant milestone in the educational and cultural development of the Canary Islands. Prior to its founding, the only university in the archipelago was the University of La Laguna in Tenerife, which limited educational opportunities for residents of Gran Canaria and other eastern islands. The creation of the ULPGC responded to a growing demand for higher education access in the region, driven by a context of modernization and economic diversification. Since its establishment, the university has contributed to the economic and social development of the Canary Islands, offering a wide range of academic programs and promoting research in key areas such as marine sciences, engineering, and humanities. The ULPGC has played a crucial role in retaining local talent and attracting international students, establishing itself as a reference institution in the Mid-Atlantic.
