Colonial Period Tenerife Politics

In 1561, during the colonial period, the construction of the Castillo de San Cristóbal in Santa Cruz de Tenerife began, a key work for the coastal defense of the island. This fort was erected in response to the growing threat of pirate and corsair attacks that plagued the Canary coasts. The castle became the main defensive bastion of Tenerife, playing a crucial role in protecting the city and its inhabitants. Its strategic location in the bay of Santa Cruz allowed it to control maritime access and secure trade in the region. Over the centuries, the Castillo de San Cristóbal witnessed significant historical events, such as the failed attack by English Admiral Horatio Nelson in 1797. Although it was demolished in 1928, its legacy endures in collective memory and in the archaeological remains that can still be visited beneath the Plaza de España.
