Sergio Rodríguez Gómez, known as El Chacho, is a former basketball player born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 12 June 1986. A point guard with a major international career, he played twenty professional seasons across the ACB, NBA, EuroLeague and Spain's national team, and announced his retirement in 2024.
Sergio Rodríguez began playing in the school environment of La Salle San Ildefonso and later progressed through the youth sides of Tenerife Baloncesto. At fourteen he moved to the Centro de Formación Siglo XXI in the Basque Country. He made his professional debut with CB Estudiantes in the 2003-2004 season and was named ACB Breakthrough Player in 2005.
In 2006 he was selected with the 27th pick of the NBA draft by the Phoenix Suns and traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. After his time in the United States, he consolidated a decisive part of his career in Europe. At Real Madrid, across two spells, he won two EuroLeagues and was named competition MVP in 2013-2014; he also played for CSKA Moscow and Olimpia Milano.
With Spain he became world champion in 2006 and European champion in 2015, as well as winning two Olympic medals. The Government of the Canary Islands awarded him the Premio Canarias de Deporte in 2018. In 2024 he announced his retirement after twenty years at the highest level; the Federación Canaria de Baloncesto then highlighted his 154 international appearances and 24 club titles.
